So…How should we clean our (cruelty free) make up brushes and is it important?

What using dirty brushes does to your skin…

Daily grime from our makeup brushes can cause breakouts, congestion and skin irritation. The same goes for your beauty blender too…The gross reality is that tiny mites can live on your brushes feeding off old skin cells, they are generally considered harmless but they may be linked to acne. There also lots nasty bacteria on there like e-coli as well as fungi….hmmm, spending some time cleaning those brushes doesn’t seem such a bad idea now…

There are lots of ways suiting every budget to keep your brushes bacteria free so there really is no excuse …here is our pick of the best

SOAP

You can hand wash brushes with an anti-bacterial soap or silicone-free baby shampoo in lukewarm water. Dip each brush individually under warm running water, and then into a bowl of gentle shampoo or soap and rub gently with fingers to get a good lather, make sure you rinse thoroughly. FLOK loves this BodyShop TeaTree soap…

MATS

If you are in a rush a brush washing mat can be a god send – it can save you hours of brush washing time as you swirl brushes over the tiny plastic teeth on the mat and it cleans them in at least half the time. There are also some super cute ones available and they make a fantastic purse friendly gift…

SWIRL

A bit pricier but a brush cleaners dream is the SYLEPRO Brush Cleanser it takes seconds and your brushes will come out like new! It even dries them for you so you can apply your make up again straight away without having to wait with rows of brushes under the radiator!

SPRAY

For on the go cleaning this spray from NYX is fantastic, it will keep your brushes soft and sweet scented. Simply spray On the Spot Makeup Brush Spray Cleaner to a dry paper towel or cloth and gently brush head over cloth until dirt and makeup disappear. We would recommend a deep clean on top of this every so often to keep your brushes in tip top shape.

FOAM

We are sorry we didn’t discover this sooner! Sigma’s SigMagic Brushampoo Foam is a natural, antimicrobial brush cleanser made from Virgin Coconut Oil. It smells great, is super gentle on your brushes and is 100% natural. Its our new favourite…

AND FOR ALL THOSE LAZY BONES OUT THERE….

Shoving your brushes in the dishwasher is not an option!!! The adhesive holding the head together comes apart, the handles crack and the paint and print come off them. Unfortunately I speak from personal experience 😭
